What were you thinking about as you read?I think about as I read about how the characters looked, the setting, and what the characters were doing. What did the text make you think about? It made me think about That katherine was poisoned and hurt really bad,Jules likes has a familiar that is a cougar, and Mirabella has dreams about her sister's.What was the most important thing that took place in the section and why?I think the most important thing in the 100 pages was that katherine was ate and ate food that had poison in them and she couldn’t take the poison like she was not one of the sisters. What is one thing you didn’t know before is about the queen and what they do like katherine is the poisoner queen and jules is the naturalist queen. How does the author creates suspense? The author creates suspense because when katherine is eating the poisoned food to make herself worthy to the queen and she keeps eating. Then when ever she is done the wants to go away but then she pukes. Before she pukes you think she is going to make it away from the crowd but then she doesn’t.

    1. I think that something important to take away was that each of the queens had some sort of pressure riding on them to be queen and that it was affecting them in someway like the high priestess sacrificed someone so Mirabella had a better chance of surviving, and katharine needed to keep the line of poisoner queens going, and Arsinoe is, well she is scared she'll die

    3. The important thing to take out of this is each of the sisters had pressure growing on them to be queen and it was affecting them. The priestess sacrificed someone just so Mirabella had a better chance of surviving,so she could end up winning and being queen. While katharine has to keep the line of poisoner queens going so she can keep the line of poisoners alive. While Arsinoe is worried that she will die if things keep going the way that they are.

I agree with you when you said you were thinking about what the characters looked like, in addition to the statement previously made I wondered what their house looked like and what the characters were doing with their face as they talked to different people. I also agree with you when you said the author creates suspense when Katherine eats the poison.

When we are first introduced to poisoner culture, I noticed that they had this preconceived notion that they were more sophisticated than the naturalists and elementals. When they said “Arsinoe is probably roasting something on a stick, and Mirabella is… dancing in a puddle...how do elementals celebrate anyway?” I immediately made the connection to European explorers. European explorers looked down on indigenous cultures thinking they were savage. Just as the poisoners seemed to look down on the cultures of the elementals and naturalists thinking there celebrations would not be as elegant as Katharines and would be quite primal.

I think an important theme in this book is people often kill each other for power. This can be displayed by the fact that the three sisters, Mirabella, Katharine, and Arsinoe, are killing each other for the power of the crown. Just as people in history have often killed each other and even commited mass genocide for power money or land.

The main characters powers seemed very familiar. Mirabella’s powers remind me of the Avatars (last airbender/Korra) because of the way she could control water/ice, make earthquakes, tornados, and control fire. At the same time she also reminds me of Storm (X-MEN) because she can obviously control storms. Arsinoe and Katharine’s powers to me seems like Poison Ivy (Batman) had her powers split in half. Just like Arsinoe she can control and nurture plants. Just like Katharine she can ingest poisons (well Katharine is supposed to) and creates bile toxins that can kill the strongest man.

    1. The book kinda relates to Japanese culture and the gods and things they believe in too.Like kagutsuchi the shino god or kami of fire also known as homusubi like the elemental queen,Komainu or lion dogs in English like the pet of the naturalist,a couldn’t find one for the poisoner queen.

    2. Erik I like how you were able to make the connections between Mirabella and Korra from the last airbender. I in addition to this like how you made the connection between Mirabella and storm from X-MEN I never would have thought of using Korra from Last Airbender and Storm from X-MEN.

    3. When we learn about the poisoner culture and how are they related to the Europeans, was it just because the other people were different from them? During which time they were told they had to kill each other for the crown. Why do they have to kill each other? Couldn’t they just have a nice game of rock, paper, scissors. I guess it also shows how it’s related to japanese culture.

Three dark crowns was written by Kendare Blake. It is about every generation there are triplet princesses born as a gift from the gods who were raised separately and when they turn 16 they have to battle each other Katharine is the poisoner she can ingest the deadliest poisons and she will never get a stomach ache but at her party she gets a stomach ache and throws up and no one will help her. Mirabella can create fire or she can make a storm with the snap of her fingers because she is a elemental. Everyone is saying she will finally win the battle because they have never seen a elemental this powerful for a long time because the poisoners always win. Arsinoe is can make a flower bloom and she can also make the fiercest lions be under her control in addition to this She is not that powerful yet so she needs to train harder than usual. And finally Camille is the mother of the triplets also known as the old queen she died at a very young age. In addition to this everyone is saying she died early because she was weak.

    1. Mirabell is a good sister out of all of them. Her dream proves that she really doesn’t want to injure or hurt her sisters in anyway. This does end up showing she truly loves her sisters no matter what. In addition to what you said how Mirabell has empathy and mercy Mirabell probably wants her sisters not to hate each other. Katherine is the weakest one out of all of them.

      Delete
    2. I think that though Mirabella is the strongest physically she is also the weakest mentally she did not at all seem emotionally equipt to sacrifice a priestess she did not know let alone her own sisters. The opposite can be said about Katharine because although she has a weak poisoner gift she seems contempt to kill.

I think that mirabella is the strongest because katherine can't hold her poison like with the meal with the poisons she had and puked.Arsinoe might be a naturalist queen but hasn't gotten her power yet only a companion. Also mirabella has been having dreams of her sisters unlike her sisters.

    Passage Finder

My job was a passage finder. As I was reading, I found two quotes that stood out to me was “ Katherine blinks. She has prodded back and forth by Genevieve’s hands since she stepped onto the block. Jerked so roughly at times that it seem Genevieve wants her to fall, so she can scold her for the bruises. Genevieve pulls her hair again.” ( Blake two). I chose this passage because it’s to show that Genevieve is mean, cruel, and a bully to her sister Katherine because she is the smallest one and her black hair is apparently really dull. During this Genevieve said that Katherine has to wear gloves because her hands had been rubbed with poison oak. That’s when Genevieve started hurting Katherine just because she is the weakest sister. Natalia stepped in to help Katherine.

Another quote is “ Natalia Arron is as close to a mother as she will ever know.” “But Natalia let Katherine weep and ruin her dress. She stroked her hair. It is Katherine’s earliest memory. The only time Natalia ever allowed her to act like a child.”( Blake two and three). I chose this quote because it shows how much of a mother Natalia is to Katherine. It also shows that Katherine is the weakest sister out of the three of them. Natalia pretty many makes them grow up fast so one of them can become queen. During this time Katherine just couldn’t hold her emotions in for any longer because her sister, Genevieve is just plain cruel to her.

I agree katherine is the weaker sister. I think this because she couldn’t hold her poison like the other poison queens before her.She is also the first to fall in love with an boy.She also has scarring/cuts from poisons. And lastly she doesn’t want to lose.

I think an important part of Mirabellas character is that she shows great mercy and empathy, at first the way pyetr described her we would think shes the opposite, but from her dreams i think it shows she doesnt want to kill her sisters.I think Arsinoe is strong she just has an exploitable weakness.

So while reading I asked myself if any of the sisters wanted to kill each other? Mirabella obviously does not because she had dreams of memories of her sisters and how much she loved them as a child, so she acted on emotion and ran away. I feel like the last 100 pages shows her more sentimental nature. Because she acted on sentiment and memory to run away and after she found out that the guy she slept with was joseph she immediately regretted what she had done because she knew Arsinoe loved him. She is also shown to not want to kill her sisters because she said when Mirabella saw Arsinoe all she said she wanted to do was hug Arsinoe. The question still poses if Katharine and Arsinoe want to kill each other? The answer for Katharine is a little more complex I think that the fact she gave the prisoner a peaceful poison is telling of how merciful she is for those who do not deserve to die, and Mirabella and Arsinoe do not deserve to die. We also know if it were up to Katharine she would not have killed the prisoner, she was just doing as she was told. I think that this is important to her Character because in the book she could have let him live and possibly gotten away with it. I believe Katharine will come to a crossroad during the beltane where she will have to decide will she follow the rules and kill her sisters or will she act out of love and let them live and I believe this time she will let them live. As for Arsinoe I think she is just afraid for her life because the poisoner always dies and she probably just accepted the fact that she will not be killing anyone.

I agree because I think she doesn’t want to have the scary dreams of her sisters anymore too.I know she is fit to be queen but she doesn’t like the dreams about her sister dying.I think this because she knows they are family and she has had good memories about all three of them and I think she just wants to go back to then because in the 100 pages she says after waking up from an dream that they are still kids to her.

I one hundred percent agree with you because Mirabella just doesn't want to hurt her sisters at all. When she ran away, as soon as she found out the guy she was sleeping with was Joseph and Arsinoe loved him. Mirabella felt terrible about that. I get why Mirabella ran away but she shouldn't run away because she doesn't want to kill her sisters. She is fit to be the queen but she really doesn’t want to hurt or kill her sisters. The reason I think this is they are all family and she doesn’t want to kill them because of that and she loves them.

The character changes in the story from katherine loving her snake sweetheart to loving a boy named pietyr. She finds pietyr when he comes into her dorm and becomes one of her servants. She loses sweetheart when she was eating poison food when she pukes and sweetheart falls off her arms and slithers away. The queen finds another snake that looks like sweetheart and gives it back to katherine saying that she found it.The real sweetheart died near a window.

I think katherine will do next is get closer with pietyr because she lost sweetheart and her and its relationship has gone down and hers and pietyr’s have gone up.Also since pietyr was bitten by sweetheart at the end of one chapter.

Her behavior is expected to be that she is strong and to destroy her sister to become queen. But she isn’t strong enough and not strong enough to resist the poison because last time she couldn’t make it out in time.

The action she adds to the story is she can’t resist the poison like the other poisoner queens before her and she is really skinny. Also she likes focusing on pietyr rather than focusing on killing her sisters.

    Connector

My job was a connector. As I was reading, I came across Walter who killed someone who killed his sister. When Walter went in the room to get executed it reminded me of Criminal Minds because when Walter killed the guy who murdered his sister, he went crazy and stabbed the person sixteen times. In Criminal Minds Rossi wouldn't care about that story, he would get right down to business. Rossi would say why not just call the BAU, FBI, or the police to take care of him. After that they or we could get him what he deserves. Look, killing him isn't going to make anything better. You just made it worse. Killing the guy who killed your sister doesn't make it right to kill him just for revenge. Now since you killed him, you won't be able to visit your sister's grave. Your sister wouldn't be proud that you killed someone. Another connection I made is Pietyr and Katharine are like Romeo and Juliet because they both are slowly falling in love with each other each moment they spend together. Pietyr is like Romeo because as soon as he became her king-consort or escort, he fell in love automatically with Katharine. Katharine is like Juliet because later she slowly falls in love with Pietyr. The only problem for them is they cant in love because Pietyr is a king-consort and Katharine is a queen. In addition to this, it's completely unacceptable.

  10. To be honest I dont think pietyr really loves Katharine mostly because of how fast their relationship moves if any relationship is like romeo and juliet its Mirabellas and Josephs because Joseph is in love with Arsinoe and does not want to leave that love behind as well as the fact that Mirabella does not want to harm her sister emotionally or physically.

What happened Katherines snake after it disappeared? After the snake disappeared some went to look for it and found it dead but they couldn't tell Katherine that because she would be sad and would not focus on being queen like everyone is expecting her to do so they got her a new snake and it almost bit her but Pietyr go in the way and the snake bit him instead. Why was Mirabella wondering so far from her home? She was wondering from her home because she had a dream of he, Katherine and Arsinoe as children playing with each other and having fun so it made her not want to kill her sisters and so she left and later on she made a storm and found a ship in her storm so she had to save him after she saved him they kissed and spent the night at with him to make sure he survived the night. The next morning she asked who he was and realized that her sister Arsinoe was in love with him but he was banished so he could not be on the island near her anymore.

How did Katharine not notice that snake wasn't the original sweetheart? She should use her common sense and believed that sweetheart was dead because she is. She thought her snake was dead because of the poison and she was correct. How could she not notice? I know the snake looks like sweetheart but she should know that that’s not the real sweetheart.

What are the most important events that happened in this section? Elizabeth gets her hand cut off for helping Mirabella with her escape. It is revealed that the temple is plotting on making Miabella a white handed queen by killing Arsinoe and Katharine. We learn that on the mainland those with gifts are considered witches. The beltane festival begins. We learn that if Arsinoe were to lose, that Jules and Joseph would kill themselves. We get a first hand experience with how dangerous and unpredictable low level magic can be. We now know where the bodies of the dead queens go. We learn that although Katharine has weak immunity she has always loved to concoct poisons.

How does the author create suspense? I think the author creates suspense through the characters feelings. The queens are all scared for their lives but the people around them keep telling them they are going to win. Which character moves the plot along the fastest? I think Arsinoe does just because she has had more chapters than anyone else, but Mirabella has definitely had her plot thickening moments as well.

Also I do not know if i have said it but I think that the world building in this story is amazing. It adds a lot of plot elements, suspense, and overall just interesting characters. Which is why, If i were to ask the author one thing it would be what inspired this fantasy world?

I was the passage finder and a quote i found that stuck out to me was “As they leave the meadow, she discreetly drops her knife. Its enough to pretend to notice it missing a moment later, and go back for it alone.”(Blake 200). I chose this quote because it says that she felt uncomfortable with his arm around her and she needed an excuse to leave without him. Jules did that because Joseph was Arsinoes love and she didn't want to ruin it. I would have done the same thing. Also I chose this quote because if Arsinoe found out then she would have not tried to win the battle between the sisters. Another quote that stuck out to me was “how did she get those wounds? It was not another attack from Rolanth? Did Mirabella come again through the woods?”(Blake 250). I chose this quote because it shows they are worried about her and what happened to her because they think it was Mirabella again because last time she showed up all the people that work for Mirabella had to take her back to the castle so they think she is very strong and is trying to kill Arsinoe before the battle so she can be crowned queen.

The book reminds me of an show called Konosuba. The show is this guy thinks he dies by saving an girl from getting run over by a truck but actually he dies by shock and the truck was an slow moving tractor. When he dies he meets the goddess named aqua. She tells him he can either be reincarnated or go to heaven. He picks to be reincarnated into the new world but he can take along on thing and it can be anything. He picks her and they go into the new world. They meet two other females who joins them.Megumin and Darkness.Megumin is in love with explosions.Darkness is a female knight. This relates to the story because of the time periods are about the same in both. Also the characters are alike.Mirabella the elemental queen is like megumin,Arsinoe the naturalist queen is like aqua who don’t have powers, and katherine the poisoner's queen to darkness because they both are in love with an guy and are dark.

The author is asking me to believe in elementals are real.Elementals could have been around maybe back in the books time but not in the present because maybe we are to lazy. The closest thing that is to elementals are either magicians or alchemists.Another thing the author wants me to believe in is that humans can resist poisons. There is a thing out there called mithridatism but that is for things like lead not snake or rat poison.

My job was a character watcher. As I was reading I could not help but to ask myself how has Katharine changed over the course of the book? In the beginning of Three Dark Crowns, Katharine was really weak, frail, delicate, helpless, powerless, sweet, and flimsy. In addition we see Katharine as small, skinny, and not a good poisoner. Katharine could not really stand the poisons she had to keep drinking. In addition this made it easy for her sister to easily push her around like a rag doll. As we get further into the book we can see that Katharine changing into a stronger and a powerful poisoner where she can tolerate the poison she drinks. Katharine also has gotten a lot stronger physically where she does not get pushed around by her sister that much anymore. The one thing that stays the same for Katharine is that she is afraid to die so she does not just sit around. I personally think this makes Katharine an amazing, sweet, interesting, and a cool character. I had to stop while reading the book to think about are there any expectations for the behavior established in this book? I think there is certain behaviors that are allow and are not allowed. For all of the queens they have to be good at their element, be proper, don’t act like a child, and grow up too fast just to have the throne.

I think Katharine is the least interesting of the sisters. I think Arsinoe and Mirabella are much more interesting, mainly because Arsinoe uses low magic, as well as she seems to have already grieved for her own life saying she knows she will die, and mirabella doesnt want to kill her sisters, like shes supposed to. but katharine unlike the other 2 seems like she follows the rules and no character in any fantasy book is that interesting.

Obviously a quote that stuck out to me was the last quote which left us on a cliffhanger. “ I ate 3 of those chocolates… I am not a naturalist! I am a poisoner.”(blake 398.) This would explain a lot not just about Arsinoe, but Katharine as well. It explains why Katharine has a pet snake. Why Arsinoe does not have a familliar. Why Arsinoe is so weak with making things grow. Why katharine is so bad at ingesting poisons. Why Arsinoe has been said to have a strong stomache. It explains why katharine and Arsinoe have been said to be giftless, they have been trying to use gifts that they do not have. They must have gotten mixed up at birth or something similar to that.

Another quote I found interesting was when mirabella saved Arsinoe all Arsinoe said was “ … I hate you a little less.” (blake 326) This means Arsinoe is starting to understand Mirabella does not want to kill her. However Arsinoe still doubts that Mirabella loves her in fact she actually convinced herself that Mirabella only saved her from execution because she thinks mirabella wants to do the killing at the beltane. I one hundred percent agree with you. Seeing how Katharine does not have much as a strong stomach as Arsinoe it would make sense that she is the naturalist. Even when Katharine got that snake that was another clue that Katherine is really just a naturalist. When Arsinoe ate those chocolates she would of died if she was not a poisoner. They are not gift less, they are training for something the can not do. So it only makes that they were switched at birth somehow without anyone noticing.

I agree because everyone said that arsinoe was all about stomach.Does this now mean that katherine is a naturalist and have a snake familiar? Also in the first poisoning she couldn’t hold the poison like the other queens but now she can.So is katherine the first poison immune naturalist.Does that mean that if someone was let's say a poisoner by birth but got switched to elemental could they poison and be elemental?

I like how you said it left at a cliffhanger and told us that Arsinoe it a poisoner and Katherine was a naturalist. Also I like the second quote you said when it said the Arsinoes likes Mirabella a little less now. I think it's because she is figuring out that she doesn't want to kill her like you said how she doubts that Mirabella loves her.

    Connector
I was the connector and some of the connections made were when she said “ Selfish Madrigal, constantly acting without thought.”( Blake 313 ). I chose this quote because I made the connection to my sister because she is always acting without thinking and saying what's on her mind so it reminded me of her. Also because if she was thinking something then she would say it weather it hurt someone's feelings or if it was a compliment because she would always have something to say. Another quote I found was “Small as she is, Jules has to jump to see over their heads and shoulders.” ( Blake 316 ). I chose this quote because it reminded me of when Savannah was at a concert and couldn’t see over people's heads so she had to jump and look over for a second as she was up in the air before she came down. She had to do that because she was short like Jules was. I also chose this quote because it shows how I people can not see over everyones head. If someone tall is right in front of me and cant see around.

some connections I made were that Pietyr and Katharines names seemed to be based off of Katharine and Peityr from hunger games. I thought this because they were "in love" and i do not know it just seems like it. i also thought that peityr throwing Katharine into the breccia domain reminded me of something you would see from a show about investigating a murder.

I agree about the looking everyone's heads and how come they don’t level out the stages so everyone can see over people's heads?Like make something so if your lighter you will sit higher up and if your heavier you sit lower? Also I have the same connection with my brother because he doesn’t really care if he hurts others feelings.

If your sister says what is on her mind then I would not be surprised if she gets into trouble a lot. That wouldn’t be surprising if she did get into trouble. When you said about being short. There is a plus side to being short. You don’t hit your head on anything, hide in small places, and you can count as a kid in the zoo or anywhere else.

    Discussion Director

My job was the discussion director. What was I thinking while I was reading? As I was reading, I could not help but think about how it is weird and strange for the poisoner comes along hunting. The elementalist would be completely fine hunting by themselves. I get why so the poisoner can poison the animal, but what if that does not work? The elementalist could easily kill the animal. Then why not have the elementalist do the hunting instead of the poisoners trying to poison the animal? The elementalist could kill the animal faster than the poisoners. In addition, then why have the poisoner's go through the trouble of killing the animals? What conflict or incident does the author use to begin the story? The conflict the author chose for this story is all the sisters having to kill each other just for the crown or to be queen. What is one question I would ask the author if I had the chance too? If I had the chance to ask one question to the author, I would ask why did you have to make Arsinoe the naturalist instead of having Mirabella’s powers with fierce fire powers as a elementalist?

the reason poisoners were hunting was because everyone was. it did not matter the gift the tradition was everyone hunted. it was a sport. it was also said that the naturalists excelled at the game and that they did not even need to look at the elemental or poisoners kill to know that the naturalists would win.

I think the reason they didn't is because with the lightning and fire they use they could burn down the woods. Also if arsinoe was a poisoner did she poison the bear from the festival? We didn’t hear from the bear again after the killing it did.

I was also wondering why the naturalist was bringing a poisoner hunting like you said because a naturalist is capable of hunting by herself. In addition to this i would also have to agree with Erik the naturalist would always win against the poisoners or the elementals.

¨´I haven't been an giftless queen all this time,Jules.Unable to sprout a bean stock or turn an tomato red or get some stupid bird to sit on my shoulder.´Her voice grows louder and faster until she catches herself and quiets.´All this time I thought I was nothing. But I´m not nothing, jules.´Arsinoe looks up and smiles.´I´m an poisoner.´¨(Kendare 399).¨´I was not supposed to love you,Kat´He takes her face in his hands.´But you do?´´Yes,´he says, and kisses her.´I do.´´I love you too,Pietyr,´says Katherine.Pietyr steps back.He holds her gently by the shoulders.´Pietyr?´she asks.´I am sorry,´he says, and then he throws her.Down, down, down into the bottomless pit of the Breccia Domain.¨(Kendare 376).The reason I choose the first quote is because it shows suspense. It shows suspense because all this time she wasn't a naturalist the whole time and probably the person who brought her to the naturalist place probably knew it too. They just wanted her to either find it on her own or poison all the naturalists and get rid of them in the first place. The reason I chose the second quote is because it not only creates suspense but proves my theory that he couldn't be trusted. He couldn't be trusted because he came out of nowhere to love her probably because she was queen and he wanted popularity. The reason it creates suspense is because you don't know if she grabbed on to an root stuck in the hole or if she fell down all the way and died. But she did make it out of the hole in the end wanting revenge and her crown.I wonder if in the next book one of the queens will have triplets and which place they would go in?Maybe she could have twins?Maybe she won't have kids and that would be the end of the queens?Maybe?

i agree that Arsinoe and Katharine have not been giftless all this time.I knew that pietyr did not love Katharine their relationship moved to fast that it was unnatural. I thought it was obvious he had bad intentions.

I like how you coe the sentence where Arsinoe finds out she is a poisoner because that tells alot about the missing pieces of the book. In addition to the statement previously made i like the second quote because it shows the Pietyr can't be trusted and it shows suspense.

I agree with you, Jacob on how Katharine and Arsinoe are not gift less. They were switched at birth so Arsinoe was supposed to be a poisoner while Katharine was supposed to be a naturalist. It makes sense because Arsinoe has a strong stomach while Katharine has a snake as a familiar.
