Welcome to our discussion! This is where you can talk with other students about Gateways you've read. Let the conversations begin!
Mrs.w. 4th hrIsabela GranjenoThe book i am reading is Amy,Chelsea,Stacie and Dee by Mary G.Thompson. The book is wrote in first person and the main character in the book is a girl named Amy. It starts out with amy riding a bud on her way home from being gone for 6 years. Amy is 16 years old but looks young, she was wearing a pink jacket that is way too big for her which makes her look younger than her self cut short hair. Her favorite color is purple so that’s why she is wearing a purple T-shirt, jeans that have purple patches on her pockets, along with dark red shoes. Amy is very shy and doesn’t talk very much nor does she show a ton of expression. Amy’s biggest conflict is that she wants to figure out where she is, what her name is and how to live there. She wants to let Amy go and be Chelsea again.
This is exactly what I'm thinking and I totally agree with all of this. I think you should've added something about the meaning behind letting Amy go, and being Chelsea again, but other than that it was good.
i will really keep your advise into consideration and try to add more details to my blog next time. I also find it really cool how we can connect and think the same about this book.
Mrs. W. 4th hrEmilie MillerThe title of my book is Amy Chelsea Stacie Dee by Mary G. Thompson. This is about girls getting kidnapped. The main characters name is Amy, but when she got kidnapped, I think she changed her name to Chelsea because she keeps talking about how she wants to be Amy again. Amy is a 16 year old girl who was kidnapped with her cousin Dee, who changed her name to Stacie when she was kidnapped. When Amy returns to home, she will not answer a single question about what happened, and I think it’s because Kyle, the kidnapper, told them not to say anything. Amy might know where Dee is, but I don’t know because she wouldn’t tell anyone anyways. When Amy finds out that her parents got divorced, and they had family problems, she got really upset because she knew it was all her fault.
i totally agree with your prediction when you said that you think amy wont say anything because of kyle . But, one thing you should add would be more about amy and how she looks/ acts.
Mrs.w. 4th hr Isabela GranjenoWhile reading this book, at the very beginning i had many questions. I made a lot of predictions about it and i was right about some. One of the predictions i had was that chelsea and Stacie were actually amy and dee but their kidnapper Kyle made them change their names based on dolls he had. Another prediction i had was when amy and dee got kidnapped they got brought to a wooden cabin in the middle of nowhere because at one part in the book she had a flashback of the cabin.
i think you should've added a connection you had with the book, but other than that, i completely agree with your predictions. One thing you could add is if you were similar to one of the girls, or if something similar had ever happened to you.
A connection i had with the book was how stacie loved someone so much that she would do anything she could to protect lola and barbie. i can relate to this between me and my sister, but nothing as extreme of course.
Mrs W. 4th hourEmilie Miller As I was reading this book I predicted that Kyle, the kidnapper gave names to dolls, and than gave them to the girls, and had them change their names, to have the same names as the doll they got. One connection i had was that Amy had long light brown hair, and so do i. Another connection I had was that stacie has blue eyes and so do i. The other prediction i have is that Dee is still with Kyle, but Amy cant say anything.
i see that we both had the same prediction about this book. Your one prediction you had i kinda disagree with when you said that Dee was still alive but we will have to read and find out. I also connect with the long brown hair.
I really do think Dee is still alive, but yes, we will have to continue reading to find out. i think its so cool that we agree on some things, yet completely disagree on other things. i like being able to take in what other people are getting from this book.
Mrs. W. 4th hr isabela granjenoThe author of this book really explains detail’s good but one that really stood out to me was, “it probably makes me look even younger than my homemade haircut, also its pink, because pink is stacie’s color. Im wearing a purple t-shirt ,and my jeans have little purple patches.” When i was reading this i could really imagine what she looked like and exactly what she was wearing. “He holds up his hands like they’re claws and grins big.” This is a simile that the author uses to show how vinnie was trying to act the dragon. He’s using his hands like dragon claws.
while reading that first quote, I pictured her with short hair, that you could tell that she cut herself, because it wasnt even. i also pictured Stacie wearing everything pink, from head to toe. I pictured Amy wearing a purple shirt with blue jeans with holes in them. I think you could've been more descriptive with what you saw, but other than that I agree with your views.
Mrs W 4th hrEmilie MillerThis book has many literary devices and visualizations. One literary device was a hyperbole. "You gave her hope, Amy, and its making her crazy. its killing her." That was a hyperbole, because it was an exaggeration, because it wasnt actually killing her. Another literary device was a personification. "Its like the room around me has disappeared." It is a personification, because a wall can not disappear, and the wall was given a human quality.
i really like these literary devices that you found. They really make you think how she feels and how this whole situation she is going through is effecting her mentally and phyciscally. One way is how throughout the book she kinda zones out and has flashbacks of the times at the cabin and forgets about whats going on in the real world.
Mrs.W 4th hrI think Amy,Chelsea,Stacie,Dee is mainly about Amy. Throughout this whole book it tells the story about Amy and Dee,how life was like with kyle, about dee kids and the struggle they faced everyday. After dee past away though, the book was mostly about the rest of Amy life and about how Amy rescused Lola and Barbie from kyle. It also explained after time pasted how Amy was going to college. Dees story was more touching, traumatic and frightening because every since she was a little kid kyle was stalking her and knew everything about her, kyle also was the one to rapped and get her pregnant 2 times, he would force her to have sex with him and wanted her to marry him. All of these things that happened to her made her go crazy and made her not herself anymore. Instead of being her normal, buddly, talkative self she was a quite, suicidal, scared girl.
I completely agree with both of your opinions. Even before Dee died, it was from Amy's point of view anyways, and thats something you could've added to make it seem more like the book is mostly about Amy.
Mrs W 4th hrEmilie MillerI think this story is more about Amy. I think it’s more about her because we don’t really see anything from Dees perspective, and everything is from Amy’s point of view. The book also adds more about Amy’s before and after the kidnapping, and it doesn’t say much about Dee, because she died. I think their stories are equally touching, because Dee was the one who got raped and died, and that’s obviously very touching and awful, but on the other hand, Amy had to go through everyone asking her questions, and some of her family members got mad at her. Also, Amy got abused, and she lost her best friend and cousin all in one, and that’s not something easy to go through. Dee’s story is definitely more frightening, because she was the one who had to go through rape, and having two babies. She also had to worry about Kyle forcing her to do other things, such as making her marry him.
I definitely agree with what you wrote. I really like how we agreed on this one but disagreed on who had a more touching story. You said that they were both equal but i said Amy’s was more touching. After reading what you had, i would say they were both equally touching.
